
Unlocking Sickle Cell Nutrition: Innovations and Insights
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing evidence based nutrition education and training to improving the quality of life of people affected by sickle cell disease and unlocking sickle cell nutrition, SCNA will be hosting the inaugural Advancing Sickle Cell Nutrition Conference. The conference is aimed at healthcare professionals working in SCD including, consultants, nurses, psychologists, dietitians, allied health professionals and those with an interest in sickle cell nutrition.

Dr Claudine Matthews
Host/Speaker
Dr Matthews, is an award winning Consultant Dietitian with over 20 years of experience working as a dietitian in the UK, in an array of conditions. Dr Matthews, founder of Sickle Cell Nutrition Academy (SCNA) a pioneering non-profit organisation, sole purpose is helping people living with sickle cell disease to improve their quality of LIFE.

Dr Martin Besser
Dr Besser has been a consultant haematologist at Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge since 2009. He is the lead for medical haematology and the deputy of the HCC for East Anglia and North Central London. He is the UK Chief Investigator for the STAND trial, the RISE-UP, ENERGIZE and ENERGIZE-T trials in Haemoglobinopathy. He has been working to create a red cell exchange network arrangement as part of the MTFM mandate for East Anglia, to bring red cell exchange closer to the patients which is due to start in the second half of 2024. He is a physician builder in Epic and was the training programme director haematology in East Anglia from 2014-2018.

Dr Lewis Thomas
Dr Lewis Thomas is a GP who has Sickle Cell Anaemia. He graduated from Nottingham Medical School in 2013, going on to work in Dundee, Boston and Nottingham before completing GP training in Manchester in 2019. He has an interest in Lifestyle Medicine and values the role of nutrition in successfully managing his Sickle Cell. He is currently working as a Life Coach and part time Locum GP in Manchester.
